Here's what some of the visitors to our website as well as some of the visitors
to our establishment have had to say. You'll find it hard not to notice the trend
of positive notes left by satisfied customers--and if you're not already one of
those lucky customers, chances are you'll want to give us a visit sometime and see
what everyone's so excited about.
"Just a quick note of thanks for another wonderful visit. I had four nights of great observing and have many hours of work on my logs to get all of my observations in proper shape."

" Thank-you for the great year I've had with New Mexico Skies! Your outstanding sky and superb support have made
a long time dream of mine come true. I would (and do) tell anyone thinking of putting up their own remote observatory
more than an hour from their home, that they should pause and re-think the project and contact NMS about hosting their
telescope. When I think how close I came to building an observatory in Colorado, expecting a generous,
but over-worked rancher to be my eyes and hands on the ground. Well I thank my lucky stars that I sent an email to you-all!
A disaster in the making was changed into a superb astronomical experience. It is a comforting feeling that there are brilliant and kind folks looking over my electronic shoulder! Here's to many years to come!"

" Wow! What a place! Astronomy heaven. Amazing equipment, first class accommodations, and a wonderful staff of folks who really know their business. Randy, the night technician, is a terrific teacher--gives you just enough to get you started without doing everything for you (Unlike Kitt Peak's AOP, which stands you next to the scope and computer while a staff member does all the imaging.) The TAK FRC scope and its Paramount ME is to die for ; pinpoint, effortless tracking all night long. All this plus a fantastic summer Milky Way, and a deer herd, too.
We will be coming back here as often as we can, and making use of the internet scopes, too. Can't recommend NMS highly enough. I also recommend the brunch at "The Lodge", in Cloudcroft; priced and very ritzy ditzy, but worth every penny. Clear skies!"

"Had a great time at our visit. The skies were good seeing that this (Aug) is not the best time of the year for observing in NM.I was able to observe objects not seen in the Northeast. The 30" did a fantastic job. Was about to see galaxy detail down to 16th Mag. A great sky, accomadations and hosts. Hope to make it back soon."

"I just got back from a three day visit to NMS and it was GREAT. I went to learn CCD at a very novice level and came back with some very good shots of M13,M57,M31,M20,M8, and NGC 4692. And that was only two nights due to weather. The skies are fantastic and Mike and Lynn are both very nice people and great to work with. I'm hoping to return next spring for another chance after progressing some at home with my own scope and camera. "

the nightly rates for telescope rental hold regardless of weather. For example,

"To those who might be reluctant to accompany their astronomy/astro-imaging-loving
spouse or significant other---throw off your doubts because there is much to enjoy
at NM Skies even if you never look through a telescope. But that would be a shame
because the night sky is magnificent. Sitting on the wrap-around porch of your unit
you will be entertained by hummingbird antics. Local hiking, Carlsbad Caverns, and
White Sands National Monument are great day trips. Mike's cappuccino and the great

"Hi! My friend Kate Lewis (Chicago) sent me to your website. Next time I'll
come to New Mexico I'll give you a visit :)
"We could write a book. A too short four day trip to the Lodge. The little
details that your hosts put into your accomodations are great (right down to a can
opener). Don't hesitate to ask Lynn about details. You will find she is delightful.
My husband wanted to study astrophotography. He received so much information both
verbally and hands on. Mike is such an attentive instructor with eons of experience.
Our hosts assisted us with fresh ideas to set up a dome in a restricted neighborhood
and quite inexpensively. We soon realized that there is a place for everyone to
enjoy the night skies with little or no equipment. Build your hobby as you can.
I had a camera and enjoyed shooting the forest, birds and wildlife. Being city folk
we had not seen a free-running coyote or herd of deer. We did see both on the road
from the lodge to the highway coming home. Take a chance. You will not be disappointed
with your decision to visit New Mexico Skies. By the way, Bowser is the dogs name.
He is quite a gentlemen. Happy holidays. May you find the star or planet that you

"We spent three nights last year and had a wonderful time! I brought my own
fourteen inch scope and got some excelent help from Mike, tuning it up for two great
nights of viewing. Then we spent one night on the twenty five dob. Fantastic! Accomidations
were very comfortable and my wife loved the satelite TV and radio, as well as the
peace and quiet, and the geology in the area. So......here I am again planning our
next visit! Can't wait to get back to see Lynn and Mike, and to spend some peaceful
time in the mountains again. I've put in a new secondary mirror, and new eyepieces,

what they are doing and it shows. They’ve thought of everything – from the complete,

"Traveling to New Mexico skies from Phoenix, was one one the most rewarding
experiences. Although some cloud cover obsured the view on some nights, we towed
along my 10" Meade LX200 and set it up on the first night. What a treat to see the
Milky Way for the first time since 1986 without light pollution. We were all very
impressed with the cleanliness of the accommodations. Lynn and Mike really know
how to take care of their guests! We loved the late night cappaccinos too! The library
was full of wonderful books and mags to choose from. The kids aren't into astronomy
so the books on nature and wildlife kept them interested. It was a very nice experience.
Thank you Mike and Lynn for a few days of bliss in the Sacramento Mountains! The
kids can't wait for a return trip. I recommend it to anyone with a desire to discover
new places including great scenery and peaceful seclusion....... "

"I stayed at NM Skies during late-Dec. 2000 and again in mid-July 2001. I
was very impressed with the facilities and hospitality of Mike and Lynn Rice, they
have put in much work into this special, unique retreat. The accomodations are excellent
- cozy and well-equipped. The telescopes leave little to be desired, although, you
may elect to bring your own favourite eyepieces like I did (...a Nagler 9mm in the
25" dob on M13 - knock your socks off!!!)
The skies are very dark; I could see the dust lanes in the Milky Way and picked
out M33 and M13 with my naked eyes! The night sky is simply spectacular! I used
their 25" dob and managed to see just about all the objects I wanted to see, in
wonderful detail and brightness. Make sure you go during the week of the new moon.
An experience you'll treasure forever. "

"I spent 23-30 Sep 2000 at New Mexico Skies. The rooms and grounds are very
nice. Mike & Lynn Rice have done a great job with the place and worked very hard
to accommodate guests.
The skies during our week there were not their best, but even so, they were better
than anything I can reach in New England. The place is dark. The Milky Way and zodiacal
light were so bright, you could almost read star charts by them, and gegenschein
was an easy sight, as well as M33. My friend Lew said he could see Barnard's Loop
through just a UHC filter (no scope). I definitely want to return.
I did 35mm astrophotography on their Astro-Physics 180 EDT, Takahashi FSQ-106 and
Celestron C-14, all on Paramount GT1100S mounts and STV guiders. Please review the
resulting images.

"From St. Croix in the Caribbean to Cloudcroft is a long way, but our 4-night
stay at N.M. Skies made the trip worthwhile. Clear and steady skies so dark they
are bright from starlight, hand-picked equipment, stunning views of familiar and
new objects, a beautiful location adjoining a national forest teeming with wildlife
and fearless hummingbirds, spotlessly clean accommodations, and gracious, knowledgeable
proprietors dedicated to providing the best possible experience.
I think that covers my opinion. Maybe not until my oldest son is out of college,

"We spent six days at New Mexico Skies in early April (2000) . We drove 1400
miles from our home in Indiana. The excellent facilities and equipment are only
surpassed by the clear transparent skies. In the five clear nights I was able to
make more images than I could make at home in a year. The quality was many times
better than the images I make at home.
We again plan this September to drive to NMS for another six days. My wife and I

"I just completed a five-night stay starting July 30, 2000. When I got there
it thunder stormed and we had a beautiful evening rainbow. By 10:15 the sky was
clear and transparent as were the following four nights of the waxing new moon.
Up to this point I had always been a star hopper, but within 15 minutes of instruction
from Matt Fargo (on staff), I learned the advantages of a Sky Commander. I started
with the 15", the next night the 25", then the 30" Dob. They are all great instruments
and provide the opportunity of a lifetime for an amateur astronomer.
During breaks from the Dobsonian telescope, the sky was alive with meteors, some
so spectacular as to leave a trail for several seconds.
The Cappucino breaks with Mike, Lynn and guests alone made the trip worthwhile.
The accommodations are great as is the hospitality even after locking my keys in
the room.
Hiking around the area is beautiful and Lynn's hummingbirds are everywhere. What
a wonderful vacation!!"

"We just completed a three-night stay with Lynn and Mike. (Yeah, I know, 3
nights isn't long enough!) All three nights were clear and the seeing ranged from
very good (one night) to excellent (two nights). I don't know that I qualify as
an "advanced" amature, but with a little help from Lynn my wife and I was able to
handle their 25-inch dobb easily.
One thought to those visual astronomers out there - you might want to bring some
of your own eyepeices. They had some, but lets face it, we all like our own collection
better, don't we? With my 16mm Nagler and their 25-inch fast mirror, I had the universe
at my fingertips!
We did go to bed early one night (when the seeing was merely "very good") so that
we could go to Carlsbad Caverns the next day - a very worthwhile day trip.
Anyway, I can't think of enough good things to say about nmskies - we had a magical
time. Be sure to ask Lynn to show you the giant fossil!"

internet and I asked my parents if we could stay. My mom called to find out if we
could stay for one night. Anyways, It turned out that we stayed for one day and
had a lot of fun even though the night sky was not working with us, Mike and Lynn
did every thing possible to make are stay the most enjoyable. We are hoping to come
back in the near future."

"Mike and Lynn, Thanks for a spectacular 3 days at your "astronomer's heaven".
We both enjoyed every minute of your dark skies, great accommodations, and hospitality.
Oh yeah, the cappuccino was fantastic too! We'll be back...."

"Last week, July 4-9 was a real treat. Having been an amateur astronomer for
the last 20 years, I've been to many locations for star parties, solar eclipses,
observatories both in the US, Europe, South America, and Australia, and our local
area sites in North Texas.Ê However, your guest observatory with its array of first
class equipment, great accommodations, and excellent and caring staff make this
second to none. IfÊ I continue with the compliments, the readers of this section
will all want to book time when I want to go. BTW, my non astronomer wife, who just
likes to curl up and read, enjoyed the mountain scenery and the great accommodations,
too. I also will not mention Mike's great cappuccino and steamer drinks at midnight. So
I must stop now. We hope to see you again in October. Thanks again for the wonderful
time."

" Last year my son Chris and I spent a night at Kitt Peak. We had intended
to do a repeat trip. However, after reviewing the info on your WEB site, we just
might opt for New Mexico Skies instead."

" Looks like a fabulous location you folks are in. Was actually surprised
you were up and running so fast judging from all the building that took place according
to your web site, which by the way is excellent and informative as well as easy
to navigate. Hope to visit sometime. Congratulations toward your new enterprise!"

"Great looking site! I'm impressed with the changes you've made and the rapid
progress made with your facility (though I imagine it doesn't feel "rapid"). Hard
to believe that it has been a year already! We miss you here at the University,
and I certainly hope to be able to visit someday. Best wishes!"

"We arrived on Sunday, May 30th. the midnight sky did not look too promising
with a full moon rising in the east. However, by 1 a.m. openings in the cloud cover
allowed me to do my first CCD imaging. By 5 a.m. Mike and I had imaged seven targets.
We had an excellent time, and Lynn and Mike were very gracious hosts. The location
is beautiful, and the facilities and equipment are first-class. I encourage you
to visit. Bird-watchers, be advised: the mountains hold some surprises for your
life-list as well. To quote Douglas MacArthur, we shall return!"

"Fantastic location!!! Many universities would kill for this level of technology.
The accommodations are also first rate (non-astronomy spouse-approved as an ideal
vacation site). The hosts are also really neat people -- thank you Mike and Lynn!!!

"Mike, It's nice to see that you are open for business. The selection of telescopes
is impressive and the accommodations look inviting. I'd like to be a customer soon.
I'll be in touch when I have a business trip that can get me close to NM."
